Plus Size Cruise Packing Challenges — and How to Solve Them

Before we jump into the full packing list, let’s talk about a few common packing headaches plus size cruisers run into — and how to tackle them so your trip is stress-free and fun from day one.

Finding Cruise-Worthy Clothing That Fits Well
One of the biggest frustrations for plus size travelers is finding cruise outfits that fit comfortably and look great in the heat. Many mainstream “vacation wear” options don’t offer inclusive sizing or the right cuts for curvier bodies. Solution: Shop brands that specialize in plus size resort or travel clothing and prioritize breathable fabrics like rayon, cotton, or linen blends. Flowy maxi dresses, stretch-knit shorts, and wide-strap swimsuits are perfect for staying cool while looking put-together. Some of our community’s favorite brands for plus size fashion are:

  • Amazon – excellent selection & great return policy for Prime Members
  • Nordstrom – great selection of higher-end pieces, quality footwear, and resort & formal wear
  • Torrid – trendy clothes, jeans, and intimates at good prices
  • Madewell – phenomenal denim
  • Old Navy – basics on a budget- fantastic activewear and seasonal selections- watch for cute cover-ups!
  • Walmart – good selection of budget fashion – shop in-store or online
  • Lane Bryant – the OG plus size retailer – great dresses, intimates, and seasonal finds

Overpacking Because Options Are Limited
It’s easy to pack too much when you’re unsure what will fit or feel good once on board. Solution: Stick to a color palette that allows for mixing and matching, and plan outfits ahead of time — including swimwear cover-ups and evening looks. Lay your clothing out on the bed in outfits, and if necessary, try it on. If it doesn’t fit, donate, and move to something that makes you smile!

Packing cubes can also help compress bulkier pieces while keeping everything organized.

Footwear and Comfort Challenges
Cruise days often mean lots of walking, from ship decks to ports, and finding supportive shoes that also fit wider feet can be tricky. Solution: Invest in cushioned sandals or supportive slip-ons designed for wider widths, and break them in before your trip. I prefer to buy “orthopedic” shoes and sandals, which you can buy on Amazon, because they pretty much guarantee comfort and support. BTW – If you struggle with foot pain like I do, you should read my article where I cover the topic in-depth. Cruise Ship Foot Pain: 7 Problems Ruining Vacations in 2026 (+ Simple Fixes)

To prevent chafing, bring along slip shorts, lightweight shapewear, and anti-chafing balm or moisture-wicking socks to prevent discomfort in warm climates.

Alright, now that we’ve tackled the common packing headaches, let’s dive into the full plus size cruise packing list! I’ve rounded up all the essentials — from outfits and swimwear to accessories and little must-haves — so you can pack smart, stay comfy, and look amazing on your seven-night Caribbean (or other warm-weather) cruise.

Throughout the list, I’ll share lots of links for things our community loves, but if you want to jump to some shopping lists, check out Fun & Flattering Plus Size Clothing for a Cruise. You can also get inspiration from our Amazon plus size clothing Faves in our shop here.

  • Beach towel clips
  • UPF 50+ sun protection clothing designed for extended wear
  • Wide-brimmed hat with secure fastening for windy sea days
  • Quality sunglasses – I usually pack a high-quality polarized pair and one less pricey option for beach days
  • Supportive Non Slip sandals or Flip flops (or water shoes for reefs, hot sand, etc)

Daytime Attire:

  • 4-5 pairs of breathable, moisture-wicking shorts or capris
  • 6-7 loose-fitting, cooling tops in mix-and-match colors
  • Comfortable walking sandals or sneakers with proper arch support
  • Anti-chafing shorts or thigh protection solutions

  • 2 formal dinner outfits with comfortable stretch
  • 3-4 “date night” type dresses or pant/shirt combos in wrinkle-resistant fabrics
  • Dress shoes with cushioned insoles for lots of walking and dancing (dancing is optional, of course!)
  • Shapewear options that don’t restrict breathing
  • Coordinating accessories that work with multiple outfits
  • A warm pashmina or wrap for chilly evenings
  • Deck party wear and accessories- check to see if your cruise has a glow party (wear white), 80’s night or other decade party
  • HOT TIP: Night one on a cruise is typically more casual than the rest of the cruise. Don’t overthink your night one outfit!

Practical Essentials:

Comfort Items:

Cruise Packing plus size

  • Anti-chafe cream or roll-on (a lifesaver if you’re wearing dresses on a hot day)
  • Slip shorts or bike shorts to wear under dresses (cruise ship open decks get windy!)
  • Seat belt extender for excursion vehicles
  • Portable fan for humid port days – we love this neck fan, and this handheld fan is a lifesaver too
  • A fan to cool you while you sleep is so essential too. Try this one that can magnetically attach to a wall – it’s so effective!
  • Extra-strength antiperspirant for tropical climates
  • Full-coverage sunscreen that won’t stain clothing
  • Blister patches – these are SO much better than Band-Aids! TRUST ME!
  • Foot powder- this one is a life saver, and perfect for sprinkling in your sneakers.
  • Travel slippers – this sandal style pair are SO great if you run warm! They are breathable and have decent support.

Medical and Personal Care:

  • Toiletries – we have a full, FREE toiletry packing list here, but the big ones to remember are shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant
  • Prescription medications in original containers. Supplements in a pill case (Caution: DO NOT pack CBD or THC products on a cruise).
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
  • Haircare items (curling irons and flat irons ARE okay on a cruise) – don’t forget shampoo and conditioner!
  • Motion sickness remedies – THIS ONE is the absolute best and is non-drowsy, but here are some alternate options
  • First-aid kit with bandages – these blister patches are a must-pack
  • Compression socks for long flights
  • Personal hygiene products you trust – check out our list of Embarrassing but NECESSARY cruise items to pack
  • I love these pouches to put all my little toiletry and first aid items in. They are thin, see through and SO handy!

Smart Packing Tips:

  1. Choose Your Cabin Wisely: If needed, consider booking a cabin with extra space or a balcony to ensure comfortable movement. Some cruise lines offer accessible rooms with wider doorways and more floor space – perfect for plus size travelers who appreciate extra room.
  2. Pack by Activity: Rather than packing by day, organize your suitcase by activity type. This ensures you have appropriate clothing for each ship venue and excursion while avoiding overpacking.
  3. Focus on Fabric Selection. Here’s what we suggest:
  • Natural fibers that breathe well in humidity, like cotton and linen
  • Wrinkle-resistant materials that pack efficiently
  • Quick-drying fabrics for multiple wears
  • Stretchy, comfortable blends that move with you
  1. Accessories That Multi-Task: Pack statement pieces that work with multiple outfits to maximize your wardrobe while minimizing luggage weight. Consider:
  • Versatile scarves that double as shoulder coverage
  • Comfortable jewelry that won’t irritate in the heat
  • Day-to-night handbags with proper strap length

Special Considerations:

Port Day Planning: Research your ports of call to ensure your packed items align with local customs and weather conditions. Some locations may require more conservative dress, while others might need specific gear for activities.

Onboard Activities: Most cruises offer a wide range of activities. Pack accordingly for:

  • Fitness classes & gym time (moisture-wicking workout wear)
  • Pool time (quick-dry cover-ups)
  • Theme nights (comfortable and fun deck party wear and accessories for decade parties, glow parties, etc)
  • Spa visits (pack your own robe to ensure proper fit)

Money-Saving Tips:

  • Pack a refillable water bottle
  • Bring your own hygiene products & toiletries, including shampoo and conditioner
  • Consider doing light laundry onboard
  • Pack a basic first-aid kit and small amounts of medication (we like to pack cold meds, antacid, pain reliever)

Common FAQs:

Q: How many formal outfits do I really need? A: Most 7-day cruises have 2 formal nights. Pack three options if you’re unsure you’ll love your outfit.

Q: What about shoes? A: Focus on comfort over quantity. Pack:

  • One pair of formal or dressy shoes
  • One to two pairs of walking shoes/sneakers
  • One to two pairs of sandals for casual dinners
  • Water shoes/socks for beach excursions
  • Pool slides or “flip flops”

Q: Should I pack a jacket? A: You should pack something warm, but a sweater or hoodie is probably enough unless you’re cruising Alaska or a COLD weather destination. Ship air conditioning can be quite cold, and evening sea breezes may require an extra layer.

Remember, the perfect plus size cruise packing list is about quality over quantity. Focus on items that make you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t forget to leave some space in your suitcase for souvenirs! With this comprehensive guide, you’re ready to enjoy your cruise vacation to the fullest.
