Why Packing the Right Cruise Toiletries Matters
Getting your toiletry game right is crucial whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned cruiser. Here’s why:
- Limited space in your cabin (hello, tiny bathrooms!)
- You want the comforts of home- having your own familiar products just makes your trip more relaxing
- Limited or pricey options onboard if you forget something
So, let’s make sure you’re prepared for smooth sailing with all your personal care essentials!
Frequently Asked Questions about Cruise Toiletries:
Before we get to the Packing List, let’s quickly answer some of the most-asked questions about cruise toiletries!
Where should I buy my toiletries for a cruise?
Start with the “sample aisle” at your local dollar store, drug store, or retailer. Target and Walmart are great choices and often have a wide selection of travel-size items to choose from. We also have a cruise toiletries idea list on Amazon to get you started. In my opinion, Amazon really has a selection of The BEST Travel Sized Toiletries for Cruise Vacations.
We filmed our last Dollar Store Haul, and you’ll see just how many toiletry items you can get- for CHEAP!

Do cruise ships have hair dryers?
Most do, but for safety reasons, they are generally low power, and may not be sufficient to dry thick or unruly hair. If you’re picky about your hair dryer, pack your own! This travel size option packs a punch, and folds into a nice travel size.

Do I need to pack shampoo for a cruise?
While many cruise lines provide shampoo on wall-mounted dispensers in the stateroom, you may find that the quality is not up to your standards. And typically, conditioner is NOT provided unless you’re on a premium or luxury cruise line. Pro tip: pack your own shampoo and conditioner! Here are some great selections of travel-size shampoo and conditioner!
Can I pack full-size shampoo and conditioner on a cruise?
Absolutely! Cruise lines don’t limit the amount of toiletry items you bring on a cruise. Pack as much as you’d like, just make sure that the bottles are well sealed, to prevent leakage. These leak-proof bottle covers provide a little extra assurance that your bottles won’t leak.

Can you bring a hair straightener on a cruise?
In the US, hot tools are fine. We have heard of some different rules internationally, so check with your cruise line before packing them.
What is the best toiletry bag for a cruise?
There are so many good options out there these days. We suggest focusing on a bag that has multiple compartments, is not too big, and has waterproof pouches. Here are some of our favorites from Amazon.
Your Cruise-Ready Toiletry Checklist
Hair Care Heroes 💁♀️
Shampoo and Conditioner: Your Hair’s Best Friends at Sea
Forget relying on those tiny bottles (or icky generic stuff) in your cabin! Pack your favorite shampoo and conditioner to keep your locks luscious. The salty sea air and pool chlorine can do a number on your hair, so bringing products you trust is key.
Pro Tip: Consider packing sulfate-free options to combat the drying effects of sun and saltwater!
Styling Products: Because Bad Hair Days Don’t Belong on Vacation
Don’t let humidity ruin your vacay vibes! Pack your go-to hair products:
- Leave-in conditioner (a lifesaver for tangles after a beach day)
- Anti-frizz serum (humidity, be gone!)
- Hair gel or mousse (for those formal night ‘dos)
Remember, you want to look fab in those vacation pics!
Heat Styling Tools: Cruise Ship Glam Squad
- Curling iron or flat iron: For those nights when you want to dress up
- Blow dryer (optional): Most ships provide one, but if you have thick or long hair, bringing your own might be worth it
Insider Secret: Check your ship’s voltage requirements before packing any heat tools!
Skincare Saviors 🧴 Moisturizers and Lotions: Hydration Station
Cruising can be tough on your skin with all that sun, wind, and air conditioning. Pack:
- Face moisturizer (bonus points for SPF!)
- Body lotion (for after-sun care)
- Hand cream (because dry hands are no fun)
Sunscreen: Your Number One Defense Against Vacation Burn

This isn’t just a toiletry, it’s a necessity! Pack a high SPF sunscreen for face and body. Remember, you’ll be closer to the equator on many cruises, which means stronger sun rays.
Must-Do: Reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating!
Lip Care: Pucker Up for Protection

Don’t forget your lips! Pack:
- Chapstick or lip balm with SPF
- A nighttime treatment to nourish while you sleep
- Lip gloss or lipstick for evening glamour
- Shop the photo above with Laneige Gloss, Sleeping Mask for nighttime wear, or CNP Honey Lip Butter
