Crucial But Embarrassing Cruise Packing Items You’ll Wish You’d Brought
Hey Cruisers! We need to have an honest conversation about cruise packing – the kind that makes you squirm a little but could totally save your vacation. I’m talking about those items that make you blush at the checkout counter but become absolute lifesavers when you’re floating in the middle of the ocean with no CVS in sight.

After 15+ years of cruising and hearing countless stories from our amazing cruise community, I’ve compiled the ultimate list of “embarrassing” essentials that experienced cruisers swear by. Trust me, there’s nothing more embarrassing than desperately needing something and NOT having it while you’re trapped on a ship for seven days!
But here’s the million-dollar question: Would you rather feel a tiny bit awkward packing these items, or spend your entire vacation uncomfortable, self-conscious, or stuck in your cabin?
Why These “Awkward” Items Shouldn’t Embarrass You
Before we jump into our list, can we just normalize something? Every single person on that cruise ship is human. They burp, they get zits, they have digestive issues, and yes – they all have those little personal care needs that nobody talks about at dinner parties. The difference between a veteran cruiser and a newbie? The veteran packed for reality, not just Instagram photos.
You know what’s truly embarrassing? Spending $3,000 on a cruise only to hide in your room because you forgot the $4 item that would’ve solved your problem. So throw that embarrassment out the porthole – we’re about to become your cruise-saving heroes!
Personal Care Items: The Stuff Nobody Mentions
Hemorrhoid Cream or Wipes
Okay, let’s start with the big one that makes everyone uncomfortable. Here’s the deal – cruise food is rich, you’re sitting more than usual (hello, beautiful sea days!), and let’s be honest, vacation bathroom schedules can get… interesting.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “I wish I’d brought…” stories in our Facebook group. One cruiser spent her entire Eastern Caribbean cruise avoiding the pool because she was so uncomfortable. Don’t be that person! A small tube of relief cream or a travel-sized pack of medicated wipes takes up practically no space but delivers maximum comfort.
The consequence of forgetting: Seven days of discomfort, avoiding activities, and potentially ruining those gorgeous vacation photos because you’re too self-conscious to enjoy yourself.
Anti-Fungal Foot Powder or Spray
Hot, humid cruise ship environments plus closed-toe shoes for formal nights equals a perfect storm for foot issues. Your feet are gonna thank you for this one, especially if you’re doing a lot of walking during port excursions. Would you believe, the same makers of Poo-Pourri make an odor eliminator spray too (pictured below)?

I learned this lesson the hard way during a Mediterranean cruise. By day four, I was practically limping through Italy because my feet were so uncomfortable. A fellow cruiser shared her foot powder, and it was like magic! Now it’s permanently on my packing list.
Dandruff Shampoo (The Industrial-Strength Kind)
The combination of sea air, different water, stress from travel, and sometimes less-than-ideal shower pressure can trigger scalp issues even for people who never usually have them. Plus, if you already deal with dandruff, cruise ship water can make it worse. You can even purchase dandruff shampoo and conditioner in bar form nowadays- amazing if you’re limiting liquids!

Pack the good stuff – not just the gentle, everyday formula. You want the heavy-hitter that’s gonna work regardless of what the ship’s water situation throws at you.
Nose Hair Trimmer
Guys, I see you trying to hide behind your sunglasses! And ladies, we’re not immune either. The combination of sea air and different humidity levels can make everything grow faster than usual. A tiny, battery-operated trimmer weighs nothing but saves you from looking like a caveman in all your vacation photos.

Pro tip: Get one that also handles ear hair – you’ll thank me later!
Tweezers for Chin Hairs or Unibrow Maintenance
Nothing ruins a gorgeous formal night photo like noticing that rogue chin hair glinting in the camera flash. Whether you’re dealing with hormonal changes, genetics, or just the natural aging process, a good pair of tweezers is essential.

I always pack my heavy-duty ones AND a backup pair with a light attached – cruise ship bathroom lighting can be tricky for precision work!
Toenail Clippers (Especially the Heavy-Duty Ones)
You’re gonna be doing WAY more walking than usual – ports, ship exploration, excursions. Nothing ruins a beautiful day in Cozumel like a toenail that’s grown too long and is now causing pain in your walking shoes.
Pack the good clippers, not the flimsy ones that break when you need them most. Your feet will be working overtime on this vacation!
Corn and Callus Remover
All that extra walking I mentioned? It’s gonna happen in shoes that might not be your most comfortable everyday pair. Dress shoes for formal nights, sandals for the pool, walking shoes for excursions – your feet are getting a workout.

A corn pad or callus remover can mean the difference between enjoying every minute of your expensive shore excursion and limping back to the ship early.
Bad Breath Spray or Extra-Strength Mouthwash
Cruise food is rich, garlicky, and delicious. You’re also drinking more than usual (hello, beverage package!), possibly trying new foods, and your normal routine is completely disrupted. Your usual breath-freshening routine might not cut it.

Plus, you’re gonna be in close quarters with people constantly – elevators, dining rooms, excursion buses. Do everyone a favor and pack the industrial-strength stuff! These pocket packs are an excellent, easy and liquid free way to pack fresh breath!
Digestive & Health: Your Stomach’s Best Friends
Laxatives or Stool Softeners
Vacation constipation is REAL, y’all! Different food, different schedule, different water, more cheese and bread than usual – your digestive system is gonna be confused. This is especially common on cruises because of the rich food and disrupted routines.

Don’t suffer through your entire vacation hoping things will “work themselves out.” Pack both gentle and stronger options because you never know which way your system will swing.
Anti-Diarrheal Medication
On the flip side, sometimes cruise food and new cuisines can send your system in the completely opposite direction. Nothing ruins a port day like being afraid to venture more than 50 feet from a bathroom.

I always pack multiple types – fast-acting tablets for emergencies and gentler options for minor issues. Better to have them and not need them!
Gas Relief Pills
Rich cruise food + eating more than usual + different ingredients = a very gassy situation. You don’t want to be the person clearing out the elevator or feeling bloated and uncomfortable in all your cute vacation outfits.

Gas-X or similar products are lifesavers. Trust me, your fellow cruisers will thank you too!
Fiber Supplements
Prevention is better than treatment! If you know cruise food tends to stop you up, start taking fiber supplements a few days before you cruise and continue throughout your trip. I love these travel-size fiber packets– they are so easy to pack!

Your digestive system will appreciate the consistency, especially when everything else about your routine has changed.
Antacid Tablets
Spicy food, rich sauces, more alcohol than usual, eating late at night – hello, heartburn city! Cruise food is delicious but it’s also way richer than what most of us eat at home.

Pack both chewable tablets for quick relief and stronger, longer-lasting options for nighttime. Nothing ruins sleep like acid reflux!
Skin & Beauty: Looking Good Despite Everything
Acne Spot Treatment (At Any Age)
Stress from travel, different water, richer food, more makeup than usual, sunscreen layered on thick – your skin might rebel even if you’re way past your teenage years. Adult acne is totally normal and nothing to be ashamed of!
A nice anti-aging night cream is great to have too, especially if cruising to destinations with DRY air, like Alaska!
Pack your favorite spot treatment because cruise ship shops definitely don’t carry the good skincare stuff, and you don’t want a giant zit photobombing your formal night pictures.
Dark Circle Concealer in Three Different Shades
Late nights, early port calls, different time zones, more alcohol than usual, disrupted sleep schedules – your under-eyes are gonna need some serious help. Plus, you’ll probably be taking more photos than usual, and you want to look amazing in every single one!

Pack multiple shades because cruise lighting is weird, and your tan might change throughout the week. What works on day one might not work by day seven! This under eye cream is a nice choice and these eye masks win awards for their effectiveness!
Ingrown Hair Treatment
More shaving than usual (hello, bikini season!), different razors, cruise ship water, and humid conditions create the perfect storm for ingrown hairs. Whether it’s legs, bikini area, or face, ingrown hairs can be painful and embarrassing.

A good ingrown hair serum or treatment pads can prevent and treat the problem before it ruins your vacation confidence.
Blackhead Removal Strips
Sea air, sunscreen, sweat, and humidity can clog pores like nobody’s business. Those little blackhead strips can help keep your skin looking fresh and photo-ready throughout your cruise.

Plus, it’s actually kind of fun to do mini spa treatments in your stateroom – makes the vacation feel even more luxurious!
Anti-Aging Night Cream
The sun, salt air, and vacation stress can age your skin fast. A good night cream helps repair daily damage and keeps your skin looking plump and healthy for all those photos.

Don’t skimp on this one – you want to come home looking refreshed, not like you aged five years in one week!
Personal Hygiene: The Non-Negotiables
Feminine Hygiene Products
Whether your period is due or not, pack supplies! Travel stress can make your cycle arrive early, late, or heavier than usual. Plus, cruise ship shops charge premium prices for basic necessities.
Pack more than you think you’ll need – different brands, different absorbencies. Your body might react differently to vacation stress, new foods, and schedule changes.
Adult Wet Wipes
These are game-changers for so many situations! Sweaty port excursions, post-beach cleanup, quick freshening up between activities, or when the cruise ship toilet paper isn’t quite doing the job.

They’re also perfect for cleaning your hands before eating, wiping down surfaces, or freshening up during long travel days. Be sure to use the hand wipes for hands, and the personal wipes for those more sensitive areas!

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Won’t packing all this stuff make me look paranoid or high-maintenance?
A: Absolutely not! Experienced cruisers know that being prepared isn’t paranoid – it’s smart. You’re spending thousands of dollars on this vacation; a few extra items that cost less than $50 total could save the entire experience.
Q: Can’t I just buy these items on the ship if I need them?
A: Cruise ship shops have limited selections and charge premium prices. Plus, they might not carry exactly what you need, and some items aren’t available at all. Why risk it?
Q: How do I pack all this stuff without taking up too much space?
A: Most of these items are tiny! Travel-sized versions, sample packets, and multi-purpose products are your friends. Many fit easily in a small toiletry bag.
Q: What if my family or travel companions see these items and judge me?
A: Anyone who judges you for being prepared and taking care of your health isn’t worth worrying about. Plus, they’ll probably be asking to borrow your stuff when they need it!
The Bottom Line
Here’s what I want you to remember: There’s absolutely nothing embarrassing about being human and taking care of your basic needs. Every single person reading this has dealt with at least half of these issues at some point in their lives.
You know what IS embarrassing? Spending your dream vacation uncomfortable, self-conscious, or stuck in your stateroom because you were too shy to pack a $3 item that would’ve solved the problem.
So to answer our earlier question: Would you rather feel a tiny bit awkward packing these items, or spend your entire vacation uncomfortable? The answer should be obvious!
Pack with confidence, cruise with comfort, and remember – the most embarrassing thing is not being prepared for reality. Your future self (and possibly your travel companions) will thank you for thinking ahead.
Now stop blushing and start packing – your best cruise ever is waiting for you!
