Stopped by Cruise Security? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

By Mr. CruiseTipsTV

It happened at the port of Galveston. My family and I had just checked in and cleared cruise security. It seemed our cruise vacation was finally underway. In fact, I was thinking to myself, “Wow, we’re going to be on the ship by 10:30 am. This seems too good to be true.” As we started up the ramp, I noticed something rushing toward me. My heart started racing as I saw it was the drug-sniffing dog. It circled my luggage, and before I knew it, I was being escorted to a private room by cruise security. Sheri and Junior were told to go ahead and proceed to the waiting area one deck up. But what happened next wasn’t what you might expect.

I never thought I’d be telling this story, but today, after over 40 cruises and just as many flights, something happened to me that I thought only happened to people trying to smuggle “special brownies”, CBD, or other questionable substances on a cruise ship. Yeah. I got pulled aside by cruise security while boarding a Carnival Cruise Ship.

Have you ever wondered what happens when those cute security dogs at the cruise terminal suddenly take an interest in your bags? Well, grab your favorite beverage because I’m about to share everything you need to know about getting selected for additional screening at cruise port security. And yes, this comes from (fresh) personal experience (talk about research for the blog, right? 😅)

First things first – don’t panic! I know it can feel scary when a security officer asks you to step aside, but I promise it’s way more common than you think. In fact, hundreds of passengers get selected for additional screening every single day at busy cruise ports. During my screening, there were AT LEAST 8 other people in the room, and none of those folks who were selected for screening by Mr. German Shephard really looked, as my teen son says “sus” (that’s teen-speak for suspicious, in case you’re old like me, or need a refresher).

The good news? Most people are back on their way to their awesome vacation in no time!

What Triggers Additional Security Screening?

Those adorable security dogs aren’t just there to make us go “aww!” They’re highly trained to detect all sorts of things, and sometimes they might alert on your bags for reasons that’ll surprise you. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Drug detection dogs can alert on your baggage even if you’ve never had anything illegal in your life (more on this in a minute!)
  • The dogs might pick up scents from prescription medications
  • Sometimes they detect residual scents from previous owners if you bought used luggage
  • They might even alert on certain foods or spices (yes, really!)

Our cruise community has shared a few stories about getting flagged by security dogs. We even heard a story about a cruiser whose bags got flagged because she had packed her husband’s gym shoes. Supposedly, the rubber soles can sometimes trigger an alert. I’m not sure about this one, but if it’s true, it’s just crazy.

What Happens When You’re Selected?

Okay, so a security officer has asked you to step aside. Here’s exactly what you can expect (and trust me, knowing this ahead of time makes it way less stressful):

1. The Private Room Experience

First, you’ll be escorted to a separate screening room. I know it sounds intimidating, but it’s usually just a basic room with a table and a few chairs. Think of it like a super-boring VIP area! They’ll explain everything they’re about to do, and you’ll always have at least two security officers present.

2. The Great Bag Search

Get comfy, because they’re going to search every single bag you have with you. And when I say every bag, I mean EVERY bag – your purse, carry-on, checked bags, even that tiny cosmetic case you forgot was in your backpack! They’ll:

  • Open every zipper pocket (even the ones you forgot existed)
  • Check all compartments (hello, old receipts from 2019!)
  • Look through every item (and I mean every item)
  • Unfold clothes (sorry, that perfect packing job is about to get undone)

Pro tip: If you’re a neat packer like me, maybe take a quick mental photo of how everything’s arranged before they start. It’ll help you recreate your packing masterpiece later!

3. The Pat-Down

Yes, you’ll get a pat-down, but it’s really not as bad as it sounds. The security officer will:

  • Explain everything they’re going to do before they do it
  • Use the back of their hands for sensitive areas
  • Be professional and respectful
  • Allow you to request an officer of the same gender

Remember, these folks do this all day, every day. For them, it’s as routine as us checking our phones for the millionth time!

How to Handle the Situation Like a Pro

Stay calm and friendly! I know it’s easier said than done when your vacation is getting delayed, and you have no idea why you were singled out, but here’s why it matters:

  • A positive attitude can speed up the process
  • Security officers are more likely to be thorough but efficient with cooperative passengers
  • You might even learn something interesting about port security (I did!)

Think of it this way – you’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at cruise security that most passengers never see. It’s like a weird kind of exclusive experience! 😉

Cruise Security and The Prescription Medication Situation

Here’s something super important that a lot of cruisers don’t know – those security dogs can absolutely alert on prescription medications! In fact, that’s probably what happened in our case. Even if your meds are completely legal and properly documented, you might get flagged for additional screening. Here’s how to handle it:

  • Keep all medications in their original bottles
  • Bring copies of your prescriptions
  • Have a letter from your doctor if you’re carrying any controlled substances
  • Don’t transfer pills into those cute daily organizers until you’re on the ship (sigh, we may have to change this packing strategy)

We read about a cruiser who gets flagged almost every cruise because she takes medication for a chronic condition. Now, she just expects it and brings a good book (and her original prescription) to read during the screening!

Things That Might Surprise You

After talking with a few cruisers who’ve been through additional screening, I’ve learned some pretty interesting things:

  • We heard that sometimes the dogs alert on brand-new luggage (apparently, the manufacturing process can leave interesting scents!)
  • You might get separated from your travel party (in my case, they asked my wife and son to proceed ahead while I screened)
  • Certain leather goods can trigger alerts
  • Some essential oils & spices can cause the dogs to signal
  • Even residual cleaning product smells can get you flagged

What NOT to Do

Let’s talk about what you definitely shouldn’t do if you’re selected for additional screening:

  • Don’t argue or get defensive
  • Don’t make jokes about bombs or terrorism (seriously, just don’t!)
  • Don’t try to rush the security officers
  • Don’t refuse to answer questions
  • Don’t take it personally (remember, it happens to lots of people!)

Tips to Make Cruise Security Easier

Here are some tried-and-true tips from experienced cruisers who’ve been through additional screening:

1. Pack Smart

  • Keep medications easily accessible with their original prescriptions and bottles
  • Have your documentation handy
  • Don’t wrap gifts
  • Consider using clear packing bags for liquids and other items
  • Keep your valuable items in easily accessible spots

2. Time Management

  • Arrive at the port extra early
  • Let your travel companions know they might need to wait
  • Have backup plans for any port excursions just in case
  • Download some entertainment on your phone (but don’t use it during screening!)

3. Documentation

  • Keep a folder with all your important papers
  • Have digital copies of everything
  • Include medical documentation if needed
  • Keep a list of medications and their purposes

The Bright Side

Believe it or not, there are some positives to getting selected for additional screening:

  • You’ll know your cruise is extra secure
  • You might learn some packing tips from the security officers
  • It’s a great story to tell at dinner and an interesting learning experience
  • You’ll be able to help other cruisers who go through the same thing

Cruise Security – The Reality Check

Here’s the thing, cruisers – cruise security isn’t trying to ruin your vacation. They’re working hard to keep everyone safe, and sometimes that means a few of us have to spend some extra time in screening. Think of it as your contribution to cruise ship safety!

One Last Thing…

Remember how I mentioned my own experience? Well, turns out, I will never know exactly what got me flagged for security, but we’ve decided to play it safe next time, and keep all prescription medications in their original bottles. Here’s why: the officer opened our handy pill case and “poked” at every pill in the compartments (there are 7 compartments, all labeled). It seems that prescription medication is a potential cause of the search for some, so we will re-think how we pack.

Final Tips for Success

  • Breathe and stay positive
  • Be polite and professional
  • Answer questions honestly
  • Thank the officers when you’re done
  • Give yourself plenty of time at the port

Your cruise vacation is still going to be amazing, even if it starts with a slight delay. Trust me, once you’re sipping that first cocktail on the lido deck, this will all be just another travel story to share!
