The Ghost Princess of Baranof Castle: Sitka Alaska’s Most Chilling Legend

If Sitka, Alaska is on your itinerary, there’s a story you’re going to want to hear before you step off the ship.

High above the harbor sits Castle Hill, one of Sitka’s most historic and scenic viewpoints. Today, it’s peaceful. Quiet. The kind of place where you take photos, soak in the views, and maybe pause for a moment to appreciate Alaska’s beauty. But long before cruise ships arrived, a grand governor’s residence known as Baranof Castle stood on that very spot. And according to local legend, something from that time never truly left.

The story centers on a young woman, often called the Ghost Princess, who is said to have died on her wedding night inside the castle. The details vary depending on who tells the story. Some say heartbreak drove her to take her own life. Others suggest something darker. What makes this legend so fascinating is that, while historians can’t fully confirm the event, reports of a mysterious figure walking the halls of the castle persisted for decades… even after Alaska became part of the United States.

And then came the fire.

In 1894, Baranof Castle burned to the ground. Witnesses watching from below claimed they saw a woman standing in one of the upper windows as the flames spread. But by the time anyone could reach her, she was gone. No one was found inside. And just like that, the castle disappeared… but the legend didn’t.

Today, visitors still climb Castle Hill for its incredible views over Sitka Sound. But if you’ve heard the story, you might find yourself wondering… what really happened there? And why has this tale been told for more than a century?
