What It’s REALLY Like to Cruise Japan with Japanet & Viking
We’re recapping our fully hosted Japanet cruise aboard a Viking ship — from Yokohama and Tokyo to unforgettable ports like Yakushima, Nagasaki, Amami Oshima, and Jeju, South Korea. In this episode, we talk about the fully guided travel style, the all-inclusive Viking experience, the cultural performances and excursions that made this trip unique, and who this type of cruise is really best for. If you’ve ever wanted to visit Japan but felt intimidated by planning it on your own, this episode is for you.
If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting Japan, but felt overwhelmed by the language barrier, transportation system, or simply figuring out where to start, we may have found one of the easiest and most immersive ways to experience the country.
We recently had the opportunity to cruise Japan with Japanet aboard a Viking ship, and honestly, it was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. This wasn’t just a traditional cruise. It was a fully hosted, highly curated journey designed to help travelers experience Japan in a deeper, more approachable way.
From peaceful bamboo forests and ancient shrines to luxury onboard experiences and hidden ports most travelers never visit, this trip completely surprised us in the best possible way.

And yes… there were cherry blossoms too.
What Makes It Different to Cruise Japan with Japanet?
One of the biggest things that sets this experience apart is the Japanet layer added to the cruise.
This isn’t simply a cruise ship sailing around Japan with optional excursions. Nearly every aspect of the journey feels thoughtfully organized and culturally immersive. Excursions are coordinated, local experiences are prioritized, and there’s a strong emphasis on authentic Japanese hospitality throughout the sailing.

For travelers who want structure, ease, and cultural connection without having to navigate Japan entirely on their own, this style of travel makes a lot of sense.
It felt more like a guided luxury land tour combined with a premium cruise experience.
Starting in Yokohama Before the Cruise
Our journey began with a two-night pre-cruise stay in Yokohama, just outside Tokyo. Looking back, this was absolutely the right way to start the trip.
Japan can feel overwhelming at first, especially after a long international flight and major time change. Having a couple of days to settle in, walk the waterfront, explore local cafés, and ease into the culture made the transition so much smoother.

We were also lucky enough to catch the tail end of cherry blossom season. While peak bloom had already passed, we still found beautiful sakura trees in Yokohama and Kamakura, which added an extra layer of magic to the trip.
One of the most memorable moments before boarding the ship was visiting Hokokuji Temple after hours for tea overlooking the bamboo forest. Quiet, peaceful, and incredibly atmospheric.
It was one of those experiences that reminded us this wasn’t going to be an ordinary cruise.
Life Onboard the Viking Ship
The onboard experience felt polished, calm, and incredibly relaxing.
If you’ve sailed Viking before, you’ll recognize the clean Scandinavian design immediately. The ship never felt crowded or chaotic. Instead, it had a peaceful atmosphere that paired perfectly with the destination itself.

And one of the best parts? So much was included.
When you Cruise Japan with Japanet aboard Viking, inclusions help remove a lot of the stress that can sometimes come with travel. Dining, beverages, gratuities, specialty restaurants, and even self-service laundromats were included.
That meant fewer decisions, fewer surprise charges, and a much more seamless experience overall.
We especially loved:
- The Observation Lounge with panoramic views
- Complimentary specialty dining
- The thermal suite with saunas and cold plunge pools
- Fresh seafood and beautifully prepared Japanese cuisine
- Spacious balcony accommodations
The onboard atmosphere perfectly complemented the destination: refined, intentional, and relaxed.
Hidden Ports We Never Would Have Visited Alone
One of the biggest surprises of this itinerary was the ports themselves.
When most travelers think about Japan cruises, they imagine Tokyo, Osaka, or Kyoto. But this itinerary introduced us to destinations we had never even heard of before.
And honestly? Some of those lesser-known stops became our favorites.
Amami Oshima
This island had an incredibly laid-back, local feel. We enjoyed coastal scenery, live music, local crafts, and even natural dyeing experiences using regional flowers and materials.

It felt authentic and unhurried.
Yakushima Island
This may have been the most unforgettable stop of the entire trip.
After taking a high-speed ferry from Tanegashima, we arrived in Yakushima, an island famous for ancient cedar forests that inspired the setting for Princess Mononoke.

Walking through the misty forest surrounded by moss-covered trees genuinely felt like stepping into another world.
This is the type of destination that would be difficult to plan independently, which is exactly where the Japanet experience shines.
Nagasaki
Nagasaki completely exceeded expectations.
One of the highlights was attending a private cultural performance at Suwa Shrine featuring traditional dance and a dragon performance usually associated with the famous Nagasaki Kunchi Festival.

Experiences like this made the trip feel deeply immersive instead of touristy.
Tokushima
Before this trip, we knew almost nothing about Tokushima.
But seeing the famous Naruto whirlpools in person ended up being one of the most unique experiences of the cruise. Combined with regional cuisine and traditional dance culture, it became one of the most memorable ports on the itinerary.

Cultural Experiences That Felt Authentic
What stood out most during the trip was how intentional the cultural access felt.
This wasn’t surface-level tourism.
Throughout the voyage, we experienced:
- Traditional Japanese meals
- Local beverages and regional specialties
- Sacred shrines and temples
- Historic castles
- Traditional performances
- Onsen culture
- Local guides and cultural hosts
Even onboard, Japanet employees and performers helped create an experience that felt distinctly Japanese while still being welcoming to international travelers.

If your goal is to Cruise Japan with Japanet and truly experience Japanese hospitality, this style of travel delivers that in a very approachable way.
Post-Cruise Tokyo and Hakone
After the cruise ended, we spent a couple of additional days exploring Tokyo and Hakone through Japanet-organized excursions.
One day included a ride on the Shinkansen, a visit to Odawara Castle, and a private family onsen experience in Hakone overlooking the mountains.

Another day took us through Tokyo for experiences like:
- TeamLab
- Koenji vintage shopping
- Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
- Famous anime locations
- Incredible tempura dining near Tokyo Station
By the end of the trip, it really felt like we had experienced multiple sides of Japan without the stress of coordinating everything ourselves.

Who Should Cruise Japan with Japanet?
This style of travel is ideal for travelers who:
- Feel intimidated planning Japan independently
- Prefer guided or hosted travel experiences
- Enjoy cultural immersion
- Love cruise tours or river cruises
- Want a premium travel experience without constant logistics
If you’re the type of traveler who wants maximum independence and spontaneity, this may not be the right fit.
But if you value thoughtful planning, curated experiences, cultural access, and ease, this kind of journey can feel incredibly rewarding.
For us, it was one of the most memorable and seamless ways we’ve ever experienced a destination.
Final Thoughts
We went into this trip curious about what it would feel like to Cruise Japan with Japanet.
What we discovered was something much more immersive, organized, and culturally rich than we expected.
Between the luxury Viking experience, the thoughtfully curated excursions, the hidden destinations, and the authentic cultural moments, this journey gave us a side of Japan we likely never would have experienced on our own.
And honestly?
It completely surprised us.
