Why You Need a Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Freestyle Cruising offers relaxed vibes, flexible dining, unique themed parties, and itineraries spanning nearly every climate. That means your packing list often needs to cover multiple scenarios—smart casual dining, active ship days, themed nightlife, and off-ship adventures.

This Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide ensures you’re never underpacked, overpacked, or caught off guard once you step on board.

How to Shop this Guide

We’ll link to our favorite NCL Cruise Essentails throughout the this article, but if you’re in a hurry and want to shop for Cruise Essentials curated by experts, here are some of our FAVORITE items we pack on REPEAT for our cruises:

NCL-Specific Packing Tips (What Makes Norwegian Cruise Line Unique)

The following packing tips are tailored specifically to NCL’s Freestyle Cruising style and onboard amenities. These details set Norwegian apart from other cruise lines, so they’re essential to consider before your Norwegian Cruise!

1. Bring “Nice Casual” Outfits

NCL doesn’t have formal nights, which is one of the reasons so many cruisers love the Freestyle concept. That said, MANY people dress up by choice (you will see gowns and the occassional tux). More importantly, specialty restaurants do appreciate a “nice casual” look. For men, think collared shirts; for women, sundresses, blouses, skirts, or jumpsuits are perfect. Here’s some great outfit ideas for your next cruise for women, plus-size women, beach days, and

NOTE: We have seen guests asked to remove baseball hats in the main dining rooms (even for lunch); however, hats/caps are fine in the buffet restaurants.

Final thought: You don’t need a tux or a gown here—but a few polished outfits go a long way and if you want to get dressed up, you won’t be alone.

2. Pack for the Glow Party

If there is one theme night NCL is known for, it’s the Glow Party. Glow sticks, neon outfits, white clothing that lights up, accessories—bring anything white, fun, and bright. You’ll see everything from simple white t-shirts to couples fully matching in top-to-toe white outfits! If you bring nothing else theme-related, make sure you pack a little something for this one. We have a full shopping list of deck party essentials you can find on Amazon!

3. Pack for Multiple Specialty Restaurants

One of the highlights of cruising with NCL is the variety and quality of specialty dining. If you’re planning to enjoy Cagney’s, Le Bistro, Food Republic, or Onda, bring a few outfits that make dining feel like an occasion. On some ships, restaurants like Le Bistro have a dress code. Typically, it’s collared shirts and long pants for men, and similarly dressy clothes for women.

Your smart casual wardrobe gets good use on NCL ships.

4. Include Gym and Activewear

NCL’s ships have excellent fitness centers along with jogging tracks and sports complexes featuring basketball courts, ropes courses, and mini golf on select ships. If you think you’ll be active, pack gym clothing and comfortable shoes.

5. Bring Casual Pool and Deck Attire

Freestyle Cruising equals relaxed vibes. Board shorts, breathable tees, tank tops, swimsuits, and sundresses all work beautifully throughout the ship during the day. You’ll see a wide range of styles, so don’t stress—comfort is key. Here are some of our favorite finds on Amazon, for men and women.

6. Bring a Reusable Coffee Cup and Water Bottle

NCL’s buffets have self-serve stations, making it easy to fill your own cup and stroll around the ship. A reusable water bottle also keeps you hydrated on hot days or on port adventures.

General NCL Cruise Packing Wisdom

These packing hacks will help keep your cabin tidy, keep you organized, and prevent common cruise headaches. No Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide is complete without these essentials.

1. Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes keep your clothes sorted and make unpacking in a smaller cabin fast and stress-free. They also help you to organize clothing by person, keeping clothing separated while packing, and on the ship. This list includes some of our favorite packing cubes. From compression cubes, to colorful sets for the whole family, you’ll find something for every style and budget.

2. Bring Magnetic Hooks and Clips

NCL cabin walls are generally made of metal. Magnetic hooks are lifesavers for hats, swim coverups, backpacks, and lanyards. Clips are great for keeping your excursion tickets or daily Freestyle newspaper visible. Here’s some of our favorites, along with a few other stateroom essentials you might find handy on your NCL cruise.

3. Pack Medications in Your Carry-On

Never pack essential medications in checked luggage. Keep them with you, and always pack a little extra of each medication just in case your trip gets delayed or unexpectedly extended (it can happen!). I like to keep my medications in this pill case that comes with labels, that way I always know what I packed and how much of each medication I have left. These clear pouches make it SO easy to see what you’re packing and they are TSA approved.

4. Include a Small USB Power Hub

NCL cabins often have limited outlets, especially on older ships. A non-surge-protected USB hub is the perfect solution. Just be sure it complies with cruise safety policies.

5. Bring Copies of Important Documents

Bring digital or paper copies of your passport, travel insurance, boarding passes, and emergency contacts. I like to store these in a folder from the dollar store, but anything will work! These luggage tag covers for Norwegian Cruise Line are terrific too, because they ensure your tags DO NOT fall off your luggage, or get ruined in the rain.

6. Pack a Small First-Aid Kit

Your kit should include band-aids, pain relievers, antacids, anti-nausea medication, seasickness remedies, blister pads, and antibacterial ointment. You can build your own with items you have at home, or buy a ready made one.

Warm-Weather Destinations: Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda, and More

If your Norwegian cruise is taking you somewhere sunny, this part of your Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide is especially important. Warm-weather itineraries require specific gear to stay protected, comfortable, and safe. You can start with our Caribbean Cruise Idea List on Amazon for some fun inspiration! Oh, and don’t forget to grab a cute, functional beach bag, like this one that comes with a bonus bag!

1. Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Many Caribbean destinations restrict traditional sunscreens to protect coral reefs. Reef-safe formulas are now a must if you plan to swim, snorkel, or go on an excursion. They can be harder to find, so we included some among our Amazon Sunscreen favorites.

2. Refillable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated in hot, humid destinations is crucial. Bring a bottle you can refill on the ship before heading into port.

3. Lightweight, Breathable Clothing

Pack fabrics like linen, cotton, bamboo, and moisture-wicking athletic materials to stay cool and comfortable.

4. Water Shoes or Strap-On Sandals

Great for rocky beaches, waterfalls, snorkeling excursions, and wet landings. Flip-flops aren’t enough for many excursion sites. These water shoes are great for men and women, AND they have a bit of a sneaker-type sole, perfect for a little support if you have to walk or hike long distances on your cruise excursion. They are also great for water parks, and cruise line private islands!

5. Dry Bag or Waterproof Phone Pouch

Whether you’re snorkeling, kayaking, or heading to a beach club, you’ll want to protect your phone and valuables from water, sand, and humidity. These smaller dry bags can be worn around your neck OR stored in a locker.

6. Wide-Brimmed Hat & Sunglasses

They provide better sun coverage than baseball caps and protect your face and neck. Amazon sells some that fold and fit right in your suitcase, but you could also buy one in the Caribbean! Sunglasses are KEY too, and here’s some of our faves!

7. Rash Guards or Swim Shirts

Perfect for snorkeling, beach days, and long hours in the sun. They pack small and dry quickly. I never cruise to the Caribbean without a good swim shirt, swim shorts and water shoes. Our favorite rash guards, swim wear and beach clothing are listed HERE.

8. Insect Repellent

Some warm-weather ports have mosquitoes or sand fleas. A small bottle of repellent makes a big difference.

9. After-Sun Lotion or Aloe Vera

Even careful cruisers get more sun than expected. You may not need a whole bottle though, so consolidate the aloe lotion into a smaller botttle, like the ones that come in sets for your travel liquids.

Alaska Cruises: What to Pack for Cold Weather

Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide – Alaska and Cold Weather

Alaska is one of the most unique itineraries NCL offers, and it requires thoughtful packing. This section of your Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide covers all the cold-weather essentials. Our Amazon Alaska Essentials list on Amazon is an excellent place to start or just browse, too!

1. Layering Is Everything

Temperatures in Alaska can swing from the 40s to the 60s in a single day. Pack base layers, mid-layers like fleece, and waterproof outer shells to stay comfortable. Sunglasses are OFTEN forgotten in Alaska Packing too, and here’s some of our faves!

2. Waterproof Shoes or Hiking Boots

Glacier excursions, trail walks, and rainy ports all require sturdy, waterproof footwear. Here’s some comfy and light boots for men and women.

3. A Warm, Waterproof Jacket

Rain is common in Alaska even in summer. A jacket that blocks wind and water is essential. There’s LOTS of outerwear choices in our Amazon Alaska Idea List.

4. Warm Accessories

Pack gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf or neck gaiter. These help tremendously when you’re out on deck watching for glaciers or wildlife.

5. Pack Binoculars

Alaska is a wildlife paradise. Binoculars help you spot whales, eagles, bears, and seals from your balcony or the deck. We love these cute travel size ones, but it’s okay to pack full size too!

6. Motion Sickness Medication

The Inside Passage can be choppy. Even experienced cruisers pack Dramamine, ginger chews, or Seabands. Here’s our list of both over the coutner and natural remedies.

7. Backpack for Excursions

A small backpack helps you stash gloves, layers, cameras, snacks, and water.

8. Wool or Synthetic Socks

Cotton holds moisture and can make your feet cold. Wool or synthetic socks are much better for Alaska. Here’s some wool/synthetic sock favorites for women, and men.

9. Portable Phone Charger

You’ll be taking photos constantly. A portable charger keeps your devices powered during long excursions.

Europe and Mediterranean Cruises

Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide - Europe Essentials
Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide – Europe Essentials

This portion of your Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide addresses special considerations for European climates, culture, and walking-intensive ports. Our Europe/Med packing idea list on Amazon has SO many nice ideas for anti theft bags, shoes and clothing!

1. Modest Clothing for Churches and Sites

Many European churches and historical attractions require shoulders and knees to be covered. A light wrap is great to have on hand.

2. Comfortable Walking Shoes

European ports often involve long distances, cobblestones, stairs, and hills. Bring your most comfortable shoes.

3. Crossbody Bag or Anti-Theft Purse

Pickpocketing can be an issue in major tourism hubs like Rome, Barcelona, and Naples. A secure bag helps protect your valuables.

4. Universal Power Adapter

European outlets differ from U.S. ones, so bring a universal adapter to charge your devices.

5. Light Jacket or Cardigan

Mediterranean evenings can cool down. A cardigan or lightweight jacket is perfect.

6. Small Umbrella

You may encounter surprise rain showers or intense sun. A compact umbrella is helpful for both.

7. Dressier Casual Attire

Evenings in Europe tend to feel a bit more polished. A smart casual outfit is perfect for dinners both on and off the ship.

I hope this Norwegian Cruise Line Packing Guide helps you feel fully prepared for your upcoming cruise. Packing smart helps you enjoy every moment onboard—whether you’re sipping a latte with your reusable cup, dancing at the Glow Party, exploring a European cathedral, or whale-watching in Alaska.
