Qantas Sydney to Dallas Flight Review +3 Watch Outs

This flight came immediately after a cruise around New Zealand, so I boarded well-rested and very curious to see if Qantas truly lives up to its long-haul reputation. Qantas gets a lot of praise, especially for its Airbus A380, and by the end of this Qantas Sydney to Dallas flight review, I’ll share whether I think that reputation is justified, along with three important watch-outs you’ll want to know before booking this flight.

Flight Overview

This was a Qantas Airbus A380-800 flying nonstop from Sydney to Dallas–Fort Worth, with a scheduled flight time of 15 hours and 25 minutes. We departed about 20 minutes late, around 2:30 p.m. The aircraft is enormous, a full two-level plane, and notably, it was not at capacity, which played a big role in my overall comfort onboard. Before my flight, I searched for a Qantas Sydney to Dallas flight review, and couldn’t find much, so I hope this helps if you’re traveling this route.

Qantas First Lounge Experience

Before boarding, I visited the Qantas First Lounge. Thanks to my oneworld Emerald status through American Airlines Executive Platinum, I had access, and the experience was genuinely excellent. I enjoyed a lovely lunch and even took advantage of a complimentary foot massage, which felt like a luxury before a flight this long. The lounge was calm, polished, and a strong start to the journey.

Boarding Process

Boarding took place at Gate 8 and was smooth, organized, and well-staffed. Qantas boards by number, and the lower level boarded first, which kept the process efficient and stress-free.

Seat and Cabin Experience

My seat was 52H, an aisle seat at the front of the economy cabin on the lower level, one row behind the bulkhead. I lucked out with an entire row to myself, which meant window access for takeoff and enough space to stretch out and nap throughout the flight. I intentionally avoided the bulkhead seats because the armrests don’t lift, making it difficult to lay across seats if you’re seated with someone else, something I’ll explain more later in the watch-outs section.

I was seated just in front of the wing near the engines, but takeoff and landing were exceptionally smooth. There was no turbulence, and the cabin was remarkably quiet. I also had two windows, which was a fun bonus for views.

Comfort, Temperature and Power

The cabin was warm during boarding in Sydney but cooled down about an hour into the flight and stayed comfortable for the remainder. As expected on an A380, the noise level was very low, making it easier to rest. One of the biggest highlights of this flight was the seat recline, which was excellent and a major plus on such a long journey.

Charging was more limited. My U.S. power plug worked, and I was glad I brought long cables. I didn’t even locate the USB port in the armrest until the very end of the flight, and it did not work at my seat, which became frustrating over time.

In-Flight Entertainment

The in-flight entertainment system was serviceable but not impressive. It’s controlled by a remote, and the screen angle adjusts slightly. The touchscreen worked inconsistently and often with a noticeable delay. Compared to my recent Japan Airlines flight, the screen quality and responsiveness felt lacking.

That said, the content selection was strong, including HBO and Paramount titles, a good mix of Australian films, music, and TV shows. There was also a moving map showing airspeed, altitude, time to destination, and even a sky cam with a POV above the aircraft. The system clearly displayed meal schedules and drink options as well.

Restrooms

The restrooms were larger than average compared to American Airlines, but they were not cleaned during the 15-hour flight. Trash overflowed, the floor became sticky, and overall cleanliness declined significantly by the end of the journey.

Service

Service throughout the flight was professional but minimal. The crew did their jobs, but there was no explanation of restroom locations, no guidance on self-serve snacks, and very little proactive communication. Some interactions came across as slightly snobby, which didn’t align with the premium reputation Qantas often has.

Food and Beverage Experience

I had high hopes for the food, especially after a disappointing American Airlines experience flying to New Zealand. About 30 minutes after takeoff, a bottle of water was handed out, followed by snack and beverage service. Early dinner was served around 3:45 p.m., with options including pumpkin tortellini, beef with mustard gravy, or a cold chicken salad, along with a selection of Australian wines. I chose the beef. While it was served hot, it was fatty and bland, and the mustard gravy tasted more like cheap brown gravy. The meal came with bread and cheese and crackers but no salad or fruit. Dessert was an ice cream bar, which was very good.

There were also self-serve snacks and drinks toward the back of the plane, but this was easy to miss if you didn’t already know they were there. Later in the flight, there was a snack walk-through around 8:00 p.m., a chicken toastie around 10:00 p.m., and breakfast at 3:30 a.m. with a choice of frittata or fruit, served with a muffin, coffee, and a yogurt pod.

Three Important Watch-Outs

  1. Don’t board this flight hungry. The food is adequate but not especially filling or exciting, and timing matters on a flight this long.
  2. Be cautious when booking bulkhead seats. The seats are narrower, the armrests don’t lift, and there is a lot of foot traffic and noise from passengers and crew near the galley. If you see baby icons on the seat map, book nearby rows carefully. The back of the lower deck tends to be quieter, and you’re not really sacrificing space by sitting there.
  3. Qantas does not allow power banks, so you’re forced to rely on in-seat power. Bringing long charging cables is essential if you want to use your phone comfortably.

Final Thoughts

The seat recline alone makes the Qantas A380 a solid choice for long-haul economy travel. The flight was quiet, smooth, and comfortable, but beyond that, nothing truly stood out. It’s a good experience, just not one that completely lives up to the hype. We hope this Qantas Sydney to Dallas flight review was helpful!
