6 Things Everyone Rushes on Cruise Embarkation Day (And Why You Shouldn’t!)

Why You Need to Stop Racing Through Your Cruise Embarkation Day

Hey Cruisers! Today we’re talking about something that’s super close to my heart – and I know many of you can relate! While on our recent Carnival Miracle cruise, I took some time to reflect on some things that can adversely affect our vacations. Of course, the thing that immediately comes to mind is embarkation day. Remember that time you treated your cruise embarkation day like a marathon sprint? Yeah, we’ve all been there, and today we’re going to break down why that’s not the best way to kick off your vacation.

The Rush to Port: Your Vacation Starts Now!

You guys, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people zooming into the cruise terminal parking lot like they’re qualifying for NASCAR! I think we all get excited on embarkation day, and the urge to hurry is almost irresistible. Here’s the thing – your cabin won’t be ready any faster if you’re the first one there, and the odds of you getting on significantly earlier are not great. In fact, showing up super early often means more waiting around in the terminal (and nobody wants that!).

Pro Tip: Check your cruise documents for your assigned check-in time. The cruise lines have gotten really good at staggering arrivals, and there’s a reason for that! Trust me the process is much more likely to go smoothly if you get there at your assigned time.

The Check-in Sprint: Why the Rush?

Embarkation Day Rush – Check-in

Okay, raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by the urge to be the first one checked in? 🙋‍♀️ Fun fact: those check-in counters? They’re not going anywhere! Again, if you stick to your assigned check-in time, you’ll probably be surprised at how quickly you get through check-in. Not only that, but taking your time here can actually help you. You’ll be more relaxed and have time to:

  • Double-check all your documents
  • Ask any last-minute questions
  • Actually remember where you put your cruise card (instead of frantically stuffing it somewhere and spending 20 minutes looking for it later!)

Security Scramble: Slow and Steady Wins

You know what’s not fun? Trying to juggle your carry-on, shoes, jacket, and dignity while racing through security. This one really hits home for me. Whether it airport or cruise terminal security, my family always get a little frazzled at this stage. We don’t want to be “those people” who are unnecessarily holding things up, and we also want to get through quickly without issues.

The bottom line is the ship isn’t leaving without you once you’re at the terminal! Just understand everyone has to go through this. Prepare as best as you can (know what is and isn’t allowed, and follow the list below), and remember it is possible you could get delayed during security. Here’s what that might look like (it happened to us!). Take time to:

  • Organize your bags before getting in line
  • Have your documents easily accessible
  • Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off
  • Take a breath and smile at the security staff (they’re working hard to keep us all safe!)

The Boarding Dash: Your Ship’s Not Going Anywhere!

You’ve paid good money for this vacation – why start it stressed and sweaty? Don’t be in such a rush on embarkation day that you miss out on the fun, or critical opportunities to make your cruise vacation better. The boarding process is actually a perfect time to:

  • Take those iconic “we’re about to get on the ship” photos
  • Get your bearings and grab a ship map (these days, you’re more likely to be downloading an app with a map)
  • Start your vacation mindset (whatever this means to you. For us, it’s just taking a moment to appreciate the forthcoming adventure)

The Food Frenzy: Trust Me, You Won’t Go Hungry

Embarkation Day Rush - Buffet
Embarkation Day Rush – Buffet

This one makes me laugh every time – the mad dash to the buffet! Y’all, I promise you’re going to have plenty of amazing food throughout your cruise. That said, I totally get why this happens. Sometimes you’ve been driving for hours and you’re hungry. Sometimes the cruise line will actually direct you to the buffet. Other times it may seem like there’s nothing else to do, especially when you can’t get into your cabin yet. You may also just be excited to see what’s offered in the buffet. Again, I get it, but instead of joining the buffet chaos, consider:

  • Checking out a less crowded dining venue (some ships offer lunch in the main dining room)
  • Exploring the ship
  • Making those first-day reservations for specialty restaurants
  • Grabbing a celebratory embarkation day cocktail (my personal favorite!)

The Cabin Rush: A Room with a View (Can Wait)

I know you’re excited to see your cabin (we all are!), but here’s a secret: constantly checking if your room is ready won’t make it ready any faster. The crew is working as fast as they can to get these cabins cleaned and ready for you. In most cases they have just a very short turnaround time after the previous passengers exit the ship. Instead of causing yourself (and potentially the crew) unnecessary frustration, use this time to:

  • Start exploring the ship
  • Take photos while venues are empty
  • Sign up for activities or spa treatments
  • Get your bearings and start planning your cruise

Top 10 Embarkation Day FAQs

  1. What time should I arrive at the cruise terminal? Your cruise documents will list your assigned check-in time. Stick to it! Arriving too early means more waiting around in the terminal.
  2. Can I go straight to my cabin when I board? Usually not! Cabins are typically ready between [1:00]-[2:00] PM. The exact time varies by ship and will be announced onboard.
  3. Where can I eat if the buffet is crowded? Most ships have several venues open on embarkation day. Check your cruise app or daily planner for options!
  4. What should I pack in my carry-on? Swimming gear, medications, important documents, and anything you’ll need before your luggage arrives at your cabin (which could be several hours after boarding).
  5. Is the pool open on embarkation day? Yes! Pack your swimsuit in your carry-on and enjoy smaller crowds while others are rushing around.
  6. Can I purchase drink packages on board? Absolutely! But pro tip: check for pre-cruise discounts before sailing. You’ll usually pay lots more once on the ship.
  7. Should I book specialty dining for the first night? You can, and it’s often less crowded! But maybe save that special celebration for once you’re settled in and more relaxed.
  8. What if I miss my check-in time? Don’t worry! They’ll still get you checked in, but try to stick to your assigned time for the smoothest experience.
  9. Can I start exploring the ship right away? Yes! This is actually one of the best times to explore and take photos.
  10. What’s the latest I can board the ship? Check your cruise documents, but typically you need to be on board 60-90 minutes before sail away.
